Preparation & Usage
Preparation Guide Planning: Allow one pound of whole turkey for each adult serving. Plan to serve the turkey 30 minutes after removing from the oven. Storing: Refrigerate a fresh turkey below 40°F. If frozen, thaw turkey, still in its bag, in refrigerator. Allow 24 hours for every 7 pounds of turkey. Cook promptly after defrosting. Never refreeze a defrosted turkey. Roasting: Remove turkey from bag. Release the legs of turkey from oven-safe leg clamp. Free leg with upward motion. Remove the neck from the breast cavity and the giblets from neck cavity. To hold legs in place during roasting, replace legs into clamp. Place the turkey in roasting pan. Add 1 cup of water to the roasting pan. Loosely cover with aluminum foil. For food safety reasons, we do not recommend stuffing your raw turkey. Optional: Lightly rub the outside of the turkey with a mixture of cup of melted butter, 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1/16 teaspoon of pepper. Roasting Turkey Using the Following Chart as a Guideline: Oven Temp.- 325°F Oven Weight; Cooking Time (Hours) Weight: 8 to 12 lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 2-1/2 to 3 Weight: 12 to 14 lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 2-3/4 to 4 Weight: 14 to 18 lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 3-1/4 to 5 Weight: 18 to 20 lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 4 to 5 Weight: 20 to 24 lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 4 to 5-1/2 Weight: 24+ lbs.; Cooking Time (Hours): 5 to 7 Times Will Vary with Type of Oven. One Hour Before Completion, Remove the Foil to Brown the Turkey. Turkey will be fully cooked when pop-up timer has popped. To ensure the turkey has reached a safe internal temperature of 165°F, check by using a food thermometer inserted into the thickest portions of the breast, thigh and wing joint. Remove turkey from the oven, cover with foil and let stand 15 more minutes. Release legs from the clamp. You are now ready to carve, serve and enjoy a delicious Wholesome Pantry™ Turkey. Note: If the Turkey is Stuffed, Be Sure the Stuffing Reaches 165°F. Whole Turkeys FAQs 1. How much turkey should I buy per person? Plan on about 1 to 1½ pounds of turkey per person. For larger gatherings or if you want leftovers for sandwiches and meals after, choose closer to 1½ pounds per guest. 2. What's the difference between fresh and frozen turkey? Fresh turkeys are never frozen and are ready to cook or refrigerate. Frozen turkeys are flash-frozen to preserve freshness and typically require several days of thawing before cooking. 3. How long does it take to thaw a frozen turkey? Allow approximately 24 hours of thawing time in the refrigerator for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey. Larger birds may require several days to thaw completely. 4. What size turkey should I buy for my holiday meal? A 10-12 pound turkey typically serves 6-8 people, while a 16-20 pound turkey can serve 12-16 people. Consider your guest count and whether you'd like leftovers. 5. How long does it take to cook a turkey? Cooking time varies by weight and preparation method. Most turkeys require about 13-15 minutes per pound when roasted in the oven. Always use a meat thermometer to confirm doneness. 6. What temperature should turkey be cooked to? Turkey is fully cooked when the thickest part of the breast, thigh, and stuffing reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. 7. What type of turkey is best for my Holiday dinner? The best turkey depends on your preferences and holiday traditions. Fresh turkeys offer convenience and require no thawing, while frozen turkeys provide flexibility for advance planning. Shoppers can also choose from natural, organic, kosher, premium, and self-basting options to fit their holiday meal needs. 8. Should I brine my Turkey? Brining can help season the meat and retain moisture during cooking. Both wet brines and dry brines can be used, but always check the package first because some turkeys are already enhanced or pre-seasoned. 9. How long can I keep a fresh turkey in the refrigerator? Fresh turkey should typically be cooked within 1-2 days of purchase. Follow the use-by date on the package and keep refrigerated until ready to cook. 10. What can I do with leftover turkey? Leftover turkey is great for sandwiches, soups, casseroles, salads, pot pies, and meal prep. Properly refrigerated leftovers can help extend holiday meals throughout the week.
