Farm to store: a Delaware Farm Tour with ShopRite

Posted by

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Delaware Farm Tour hosted by Kenny Family ShopRite stores and the Delaware Department of Agriculture. I, along with over 100 other ShopRite customers, spent an entire day touring farms in Kent and Sussex counties and the best part was that the tour was free and open to the community!

We boarded a comfortable coach bus in the morning and headed down to Kent County to Fifer Orchards in Camden and Papen Farms in Dover. At Fifer we visited the farm shop (and sampled some delicious apple and blueberry doughnuts!) and toured the farm. At Papen we learned all about harvesting cabbage and even received a fresh head of cabbage as a souvenir.

In Sussex County we stopped for a complimentary picnic lunch in Trap Pond State Park before continuing our tour with Vincent Farms where we got a crash course in corn and watermelon farming.

Within two weeks of returning from the farm tour I started seeing Delaware corn in my local ShopRite, which was really exciting. I grew up eating fresh produce from roadside stands and I’m pleased that ShopRite provides local produce at competitive prices for suburban dwellers like myself.

Regardless of where you live, you’ll find that your ShopRite store stocks local produce. The same produce featured on our tour a few weeks ago is now ready and available in my local store. In the past week I’ve purchased local corn, zucchini, tomatoes, Swiss chard, and blueberries. As the summer goes on you’ll enjoy local watermelon, peaches, eggplants and more. Take advantage of summer’s bounty and buy fresh produce at great prices at your local store!
