My “I Refuse To Eat Rabbit Food” Diet: Strawberry Banana Smoothies With Pure Via

I’m on a diet.

I know, I know, such am ugly word.  But the truth is that this past winter was awful, the cold made my joints hurt and I spent much of my time huddled on my couch with a heating pad instead of exercising.  Now that it’s warmer, my joints feel better, but the inactivity of the winter has had it’s consequences.

The kids are almost out of school and the sun is blazing and I love it.  I figured it’s a great time to try to shed some pounds.  We will be outside a lot and my garden is starting to produce.

A word about diets: I’m not willing to starve myself to lose weight.  And food has to taste good.  I can’t stick to an eating plan if the meals I’m eating are not tasty and satisfying.

Today I made my family smoothies to go with dinner, to use up some fruit that was on the verge of spoiling.  I love smoothies, but most recipes have way too much added sugar.  At 15 calories per teaspoon, it adds up.

Instead, I added Pure Via All Natural Sweetener.  Made from the stevia leaf, Pure Via is a great alternative to artificial sweeteners or white sugar.  It’s more than 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, so a little goes a long way.  It’s also zero calorie and does not contain genetically modified ingredients.

I altered the recipe for Strawberry Banana Smoothies by swapping non-fat Greek yogurt for regular yogurt and cow’s milk for soy milk, and I also threw in some blueberries and raspberries from my fridge.

The result was a tasty smoothie free of added sugar, which saved me 120 calories in the whole batch.  It was especially yummy garnished with fresh chocolate mint from my garden.
