Fighting hunger in the community is the core focus of ShopRite’s charitable giving and in 1999 we established the ShopRite Partners In Caring program, a community-based, HUNGER-FIGHTING initiative that supports more than 1,700 CHARITIES — soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior citizen centers. Since the program began, ShopRite has donated more than $29 million to food banks to purchase food for the hungry.
ShopRite is a company built on giving back. We take great pride in every program, every donation and every act of volunteerism. We are partners in caring for our neighbors, families, homes and communities. And we participate, not because we have to, but because it’s something a good neighbor should do.
Here’s a glimpse at some of the recent community programs ShopRite has focused on this year…
ShopRite Employees Raise $1 Million During Hunger Action Month
Nowadays, almost anyone can raise funds for a worthy cause, but $1 million in one short month?
That’s just what ShopRite employees were challenged to do during Hunger Action Month last September. The annualShopRite Partners In Caring Hunger-Fighting Contest kicked off with an unprecedented challenge — to raise $1 million for the cause.
Showing their commitment to those in need through the collection of donations at checkout and through in-store fundraising events, ShopRite associates met the challenge head-on. Of the 240 stores across six states, each of the 45 winning stores selected two associates to be featured on a special-editionCheerios box, which was sold exclusively at ShopRite stores during the month of March. In addition, the top 5 stores were awarded $3,000 to be donated to a local hunger fighting charity of their choice, and the remaining 40 stores were awarded $500 each for their charity of choice.
“We are so thankful to ShopRite associates for their dedication to help those in need who struggle with the issue of hunger,” said Christine Magyarits, spokesperson for ShopRite Partners In Caring. “It is truly remarkable how the involvement in our hunger-fighting activities grows every year, increasing the money raised for people in need.”
ShopRite Fans “Like” Fighting Hunger
Bringing help and hope to the many who face hunger in our community may seem like a daunting task, but ShopRite recently sought the help of its Facebook fans to lend a helping hand, one “Like” at a time. During ShopRite’s legendary Can Can Sale in January, fighting hunger was as easy as clicking the “Like” button on ShopRite’s Facebook page!
The promotion, “Cans for Fans”, encouraged ShopRite Facebook fans to get involved in ShopRite’s fight against hunger through the use of social media. For every new fan on ShopRite’s official Facebook page, ShopRite donated one can of food to local food banks in the communities it serves. Fans were encouraged to spread the word about “Cans for Fans” by sharing ShopRite’s official Facebook page with friends. The more “Likes” ShopRite received, the larger the donation of cans of food — a grand total of 50,000 — which were delivered to food banks in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
“The annual Can Can sale is a great opportunity for ShopRite to help raise awareness of the issue of hunger in our communities,” said Christine Magyarits, ShopRite Partners In Caring spokesperson. “‘Cans for Fans’ was a powerful way to engage our customers in the cause. We are so grateful to our loyal fans for continuing to support those in need.”
ShopRite Employees and Customers Break Record in the Fight Against Hunger
“Would you like to add a $1, $3, or $5 hunger-fighting donation to your bill?” ShopRite employees asked over and over again to loyal customers at checkout lines. From October through December, that simple question led ShopRite stores to raise a record breaking $764,000 for the 2011 Check-Out Hunger campaign. One hundred percent of all funds raised through the Check-Out Hunger program in ShopRite stores are donated to local food banks.
Each year, with the help of their loyal customers and hardworking employees, ShopRite stores in six states compete to raise funds for this worthy cause. The donations benefit local food banks in ShopRite communities across CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE and MD.
This year, the top four winning stores in the Check Out Hunger competition were all located in Connecticut and are owned by Milford Markets, a ShopRite family business operated by the Garafalo family. The Connecticut stores raised an outstanding amount of $123,964 of the total raised, and a check was presented to Nancy Carrington, president and CEO of the Connecticut Food Bank, at the ShopRite of Hamden on April 26, 2012.
ShopRite Announces Knock Out Hunger T-Shirt Design Contest Winner
Having your original t-shirt design featured on the runway during New York Fashion Week and having your photo appear on a custom-made Cheerios box, all while supporting the fight to end hunger, seem like unrelated, unattainable and nearly impossible goals, but with the help of ShopRite Partners In Caring and General Mills, all of these things became a reality for one New Jersey resident.
On February 14, 2012, ShopRite announced the grand prize winner of its ShopRite Partners In Caring Knock Out Hunger T-Shirt Design Contest at New York City’s Time Warner Center. The “Knock Out Hunger” T-Shirt Contest challenged up-and-coming artists to raise hunger awareness by expressing what the issue means to them through original t-shirt designs. The objective of the contest was to find individuals who are concerned about the plight of the hungry and who could artistically express their message by creating a t-shirt design.
Celebrity Judges Jeannie Mai, host of Style Network’s “How Do I Look?” Korto Momolu, from BRAVO’s “Project Runway” and Chris Gardner, author of the The Pursuit of Happyness, revealed the top 15 t-shirt submissions, along with the grand prize-winning design submitted by Paramus, New Jersey resident Ognen Trpeski (photo above, center). Trpeski’s winning t-shirt design will be featured on a special-edition Cheerios box, to be sold exclusively at ShopRite stores this fall, and will also appear on the runway in Korto Momolu’s fashion show during New York Fashion Week 2012.
ShopRite Partners In Caring Recruits New Turkey Bowlers to its Hunger Fighting Flock
What do you get when a Harlem Globetrotter competes against another Harlem Globetrotter with a five pound frozen turkey replica and some paper towel pins? The Third Annual Turkey Bowling Invitational, of course!
This annual event pits teams from adjacent states in a turkey bowling competition, the winner of which receives a turkey donation to its local food bank for the Thanksgiving holiday. This past year, in an effort to help increase awareness of the issue of hunger, the traditional NY vs. NJ games expanded to teams in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and South Jersey.
New York and New Jersey kicked things off on November 10, 2011, when undefeated Team New York attempted to keep its turkey bowling championship title. Team New York consisted of a Harlem Globetrotter, the ShopRite of Staten Island store manager and a representative from the Food Bank For New York City, while Team New Jersey consisted of another Harlem Globetrotter, the ShopRite of Bernardsville store manager and a representative from the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. Team New Jersey was the victor, wrenching the title away from the New York Team.
The following week, Team Baltimore played against Team Washington D.C. on November 14, while Team Philadelphia competed against Team South Jersey on Tuesday, November 15th, with an appearance by the Phillies’ Phanatic.
Three ShopRite teams walked away with the 2011 ShopRite Partners In Caring Turkey Bowling Invitational trophy and championship title, but more importantly, all six teams that participated each won 100 additional cases of frozen turkeys for their local food banks in time to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner, including the Food Bank For New York City, Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Philabundance, Food Bank of South Jersey, Maryland Food Bank, and the Capital Area Food Bank.
ShopRite Supports Susan G. Komen Races for the Cure
A longtime supporter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, ShopRite is proud to celebrate the lives of breast cancer survivors and remember loved ones affected by the disease by sponsoring Race for the Cure events throughout its marketplace.
This spring, ShopRite sponsored three Susan G. Komen Races for the Cure – the North Jersey Affiliate’s Race in the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange, the Philadelphia Race in Center City, and the Connecticut Race for the Cure.
At each race, ShopRite employees, clad in specially-designed pink “Team ShopRite” shirts, ran or walked “for the Cure,” ShopRite volunteers raising much-needed funds for this very important cause.
As a part of its sponsorship, ShopRite also provides a continental breakfast and water for all participating runners, and boxed lunches for the Survivors Tent. ShopRite will also proudly sponsor the Central and South Jersey Affiliate’s Race for the Cure at Six Flags Great Adventure this Fall.
ShopRite is Title Sponsor of Connecticut Nutmeg Games
Held for the past 24 years in cities throughout Connecticut, the Nutmeg Games provide a competitive sports arena for the state’s amateur athletes aged six to eighteen.
ShopRite has been a sponsor of the Games for the past 15 years, providing food for the athletes, officials, attendees and volunteers.
The donations ShopRite makes are far reaching. Each year, leftover food is donated to various local food banks, food pantries and other hunger-fighting non-profit organizations.

ShopRite’s support gives us another opportunity to thank our loyal customers for supporting us.”

ShopRite and Special Olympics New Jersey
During the weekend of June 9 and 10, more than 500 Wakefern and ShopRite volunteers joined 2,400 athletes from across the state at the 2012 Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games. ShopRite has been a proud sponsor of the event for twenty-six years. This year, ShopRite volunteers staffed the ShopRite food tent, serving a grand total of 9,216 hamburgers and 8,156 hotdogs to athletes and their families, as well as fresh salads and ice cream.
The College of New Jersey is the annual host for the Games, which include Aquatics, Bocce, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Softball, Tennis and Track & Field.
“ShopRite volunteers touch the lives of so many special athletes and their families at each year’s Special Olympics New Jersey. It is our great privilege to have supported this program for nearly three decades and we are so honored to be welcomed each year as a part of the Special Olympics family,” said Christine Magyarits, ShopRite spokesperson.
Wakefern and ShopRite volunteers also staffed activities and game tents, collectively called Olympic Village while a DJ kept crowds entertained all day. In addition, the Olympic Village showcased a ‘Live Right’ tent where volunteers distributed healthy foods and a hosted a Supermarket Careers informational area.
The ShopRite Cup
The ShopRite Cup — that coveted recognition of high school athletic excellence – was awarded to six winning schools for the 2011-2012 school year in the 10th Annual ShopRite Cup Competition. This competition is sponsored by ShopRite stores and coordinated by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) to honor New Jersey’s top-performing high school athletic programs.
To qualify for this distinguished award, schools earned ShopRite Cup points during the school year based on their performance in championship games in 32 individual sports sanctioned by NJSIAA. ShopRite Cup points are also awarded to schools that exhibit true sportsmanship and goodwill. The six schools with the highest totals are named winners!
“This program has become much more than just a competition among these schools,” said Steve Timko, executive director of NJSIAA. “The overwhelming teamwork and good sportsmanship that the contest evokes in these kids is the real draw. Win or lose, we are so pleased to provide these students with an opportunity to shine.”

ShopRite Sets $275K Fundraising Goal to Benefit Veterans
As part of its annual fundraising initiative to benefit local organizations that aid veterans and their families throughout Orange County in New York State, ShopRite has increased its goals this year to $275,000 — $50,000 above what was raised in 2011.
Now in its third year, ShopRite’s Veterans Campaign directly supports four local New York organizations: the Schenectady Military Affairs Council, Tower of Hope, Orange County Veterans Food Pantry and the Committee for the Families of Iraq and Afghanistan War Vets. The Orange County Veterans Food Pantry is located at the ShopRite of Montgomery, in a space adjacent to and donated by the store, complete with its very own entrance.
ShopRite’s Veterans Campaign, which runs from July through September, is comprised of various fundraising efforts, from a check-out counter donation drive to highly successful initiatives led by the store teams including car washes, hot dog sales, pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, raffles and giveaways.
