National Hunger Awareness Month

Raising help and hope for the hungry is a top priority for ShopRite associates who band together each year for a five week contest held during National Hunger Awareness Month in September. Sponsored each year by ShopRite and General Mills, this year’s ShopRite Partners In Caring contest issued a new challenge to ShopRite associates – to raise an unprecedented $1.5 million to support food banks in the communities ShopRite serves. You may notice a flurry of activity as our dedicated associates work to engage the community in raising funds to help those in need and creating awareness about the issue of hunger.

Some of the highlights of this year’s upcoming hunger-fighting activities include:

  • The unveiling of a special-edition Cheerios box, sold exclusively at ShopRite and featuring the winners of the ShopRite Partners In Caring “Knock Out Hunger” T-shirt Contest;
  • The “Help Bag Hunger” event, which will be held on Wednesday, September 19th.  Visit your local ShopRite that day to meet community leaders and dignitaries who will bag groceries at checkout to help raise awareness of the issue of hunger in our communities;
  • Customers who donate $2 at checkout during the month of September will receive a coupon for a free product offer;
  • ShopRite “fans” can check out the status of our $1.5 million goal all month long on the official ShopRite Facebook page, or!

What’s different about YOUR box of Cheerios from ShopRite this September?

When sitting down to a bowl of your favorite cereal, take a look at the back of a very special, custom box with a powerful message for hunger-fighting heroes everywhere…

All month long, a special-edition Cheerios box featuring unique t-shirt designs by New Jersey-area customers will be available in all ShopRite stores. 


Charles Estergren (2nd place) of Egg Harbor Township, Ognen Trpeski (Grand prize winner) of Paramus, NJ and Michele Guerriero (3rd place) of Surf City, NJ show off their winning t-shirt designs.

Last September, during Hunger Action Month, ShopRite challenged up-and-coming artists to raise hunger awareness by expressing what the issue means to them through original t-shirt designs, featuring the ShopRite Partners In Caring logo.

The top three winners were chosen by a pair of fashion-minded celebrity judges: Jeannie Mai, host of Style Network’s “How Do I Look?” and Korto Momolu, from BRAVO’s “Project Runway.” The winning, one-of-a-kind designs are proudly featured on the back of a special-edition Cheerios box, sold exclusively at ShopRite during September’s Hunger Action Month.

Ognen Trpeski of Paramus, NJ took home the first place honors and received a prize of $2,500, as well as a matching $2,500 donation to his local food bank. His thought-provoking design will also appear on the runway in Korto Momolu’s fashion show during New York Fashion Week 2012.
