Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark molasses
1/4 cup water
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Mix in molasses, water, flour, salt,
baking soda, ginger and nutmeg to make a smooth batter. Do not over mix.
2. Cover bowl and chill in refrigerator two to three hours.
3. Heat oven to 375°F. On a lightly floured surface roll the dough to ¼” thick.
4. Cut with a gingerbread cookie cutter, rerolling dough scraps to cut additional cookies.
5. Place cut cookies carefully on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake 10 to 12 minutes.
6. Immediately remove from baking sheet to a rack to cool. Decorate with store-bought
icing or other methods.
