A ShopRite Salute

Posted by

Veterans are an integral part of the ShopRite family. We count servicemen and –women past and present among our store owners, managers and team members, our vendors and valued shoppers. Each independently owned and operated ShopRite connects with community veteran organizations year-round. This Memorial Day weekend, we spotlight the way eight South Jersey stores roll out the red, white and blue carpet to celebrate local heroes.

Zallie ShopRites’ annual Memorial Day Honor Our Veterans Luncheon was born six years ago of a desire to thank the veterans who visit our stores for their service and sacrifices. The event takes place at the octet of Camden and Gloucester County stores* owned by Bruce and George Zallie. With the help of local VFW chapters, each store’s team selects six honorees, representing the five service branches of the military. Then, all 2,000 Zallie ShopRite associates get into the act, prepping a sumptuous luncheon and gifts for the honored veterans, who attend with up to four family members.

First, the Maintenance crew decks out the store in patriotic colors. The Kitchen whips up a delicious hot buffet featuring popular Zallie’s Own family recipes. The Bakery decorates a cake with insignias from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. The Produce and Floral departments create take-home surprises for each honoree, assembling gourmet fruit-and-cheese baskets and gorgeous arrangements, respectively.

The honorees also receive a certificate of appreciation, a patriotic Swarovski crystal ornament and a $200 bank gift card. This year’s luncheon was the biggest event yet: Director of Marketing Giuliana Zallie and past honoree Richard Buck (USMC) were even invited to chat about it on NBC 10 Philadelphia’s Morning News.

It’s a pleasure getting to know our wonderful local heroes every year. Enjoy these photos from the 2017 luncheon and click through to read some of the honorees’ fascinating Service Stories, generously shared by the veterans themselves and featured on our stores’ local Facebook pages. And to all veterans in the extended ShopRite family, thank you for your service.
