These scenarios play out every day in millions of households and whether it’s in the city, suburbs or in your neighborhood, the problem is the same – hunger. It may be hard to believe that more than 40 million Americans face food insecurity every day.
ShopRite believes we can lend a hand in the fight against hunger. That’s why in 1999, the ShopRite Partners In Caring program was established – a community-based, hunger fighting initiative that supports more than 2000 charities – soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior citizen centers and other organizations on the front lines of fighting hunger. As a food retailer, ShopRite’s core focus is fighting hunger in the community. ShopRite stores support local hunger fighting agencies throughout the northeast in communities served by ShopRite stores – through monetary and food donations as well as through volunteerism. Since the program began in 1999, more than $40 million has been donated to local food banks.

ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest
Every year, during September’s Hunger Action Month, the ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios competition is held in ShopRite supermarkets across the northeast. The contest is a collaborative effort between ShopRite store associates, our generous customers, and our supportive vendor partner, General Mills.
The contest encourages ShopRite store associates to compete amongst each other in a friendly competition designed to raise funds in support of the ShopRite Partners In Caring program and to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our communities. Stores hold hot dog sales, 5K runs, and other fund raising events, all with the sole focus of fighting hunger. The sale of select products and unique charitable events from store to store raised $1.4 million dollars during the contest period this September.
Forty winning ShopRite stores select associates to be featured on special-edition boxes of General Mills’ iconic cereal, Cheerios, and sold exclusively at ShopRite stores.
“Our stores take pride in all of our charitable efforts, in particular, the ShopRite Partners In Caring program,” said Diane McCurdy, Corporate Event Planner for ShopRite. “As a supermarket chain we feel it’s important to make sure everyone is fed.”
ShopRite Partners In Caring Help Bag Hunger
Each year, on the third Wednesday of September, ShopRite stores throughout the Northeast celebrate ShopRite Partners In Caring Help Bag Hunger Day, a storewide event that invites local dignitaries to join ShopRite associates at the register. The welcomed guests don aprons and bag groceries to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our communities. The day is annually recognized by state legislatures and governors throughout the six states that ShopRite services.
ShopRite Partners In Caring Help Bag Hunger Day brings people together from all different segments of the community to help those in need. Christine Magyarits, Manager of Community Relations for Wakefern/ShopRite, spoke of the program enthusiastically. “We feel fortunate to have the support of local officials who participate in this event year after year. Knowing that so many people care about those who are food insecure is very gratifying.”
Slam Dunk Hunger – Harlem Globetrotters
Each year, ShopRite donates 60 tons of turkeys to local food banks so that families in need can sit down to a Thanksgiving holiday meal. ShopRite brings awareness to the issue of hunger by engaging with the Harlem Globetrotters in our annual Slam Dunk Hunger event. Taking place in a ShopRite store prior to Thanksgiving, the event challenges our customers to make a “fowl” shot for charity. Every basket made during this special event results in a case of turkeys for the local food bank. The event is a fun, engaging way to bring awareness to the issue of hunger.
This year’s event took place at the ShopRite of Forest and Richmond on Staten Island and was capped off by ShopRite customer Yaritza Huertas draining five consecutive shots, for a total of 400 turkeys for the Food Bank for New York City.
Since its inception, ShopRite has donated more than one million pounds of holiday turkey to food banks within the communities it serves in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
Check-Out Hunger in your Community
Check-Out Hunger is program held during the fall months in ShopRite stores to collect donations benefitting local Feeding America food banks in their mission to feed the hungry. The program asks customers to make donations of $1, $3 and $5 when they check out with their groceries.
In 2015, ShopRite stores collected a record breaking $1,008,320, which was donated directly to local area food banks. “Check-Out Hunger works very effectively because the contributions go directly to the food banks where the dollars are collected”, said Christine Magyarits, Community Relations Manager for ShopRite. “Knowing that you’ve made life just a little bit easier for someone is a good feeling.”
ShopRite LPGA Classic Luncheon
On June 3, 2016, ShopRite held a community luncheon at the Stockton Seaview Hotel in Galloway, NJ, to distribute $1.5 million dollars in donations to local charities. Leaders from more than 40 charities were invited to the luncheon as an opportunity for ShopRite to thank them for all that they do. From providing training for people entering the workforce to feeding the hungry or supporting physicians in their efforts to research and cure illnesses, the charities recognized tackle these causes and more across ShopRite’s six state marketplace in NJ, NY, PA, CT, MD, and DE.
Not only did charities receive contributions for their incredible work, but a few representatives of the nonprofits also had an opportunity to speak to the group about how the ShopRite LPGA grants have made a difference in their organizations.
The audience was still as Glenn Jenkins, executive director of Embrace Kids Foundation, described how his organization addresses the spiritual, emotional, and financial needs of the families of children stricken with catastrophic illnesses. Whether hosting a birthday party or providing funds to help pay bills, the organization does its best to help.
“Wakefern and ShopRite support has been incredible. The funds enable us to make life just a bit easier for the families and children we serve,” stated Glenn Jenkins, Executive Director of the Embrace Kids Foundation.
Garry Maddox, a retired centerfielder for the Phillies, also took the opportunity to thank ShopRite, the first organization to sponsor his Compete 360 movement. The program is centered on design thinking, which is a formal method for practical and creative resolution of problems and the creation of solutions. Compete 360 supports inner-city schools with a specific focus on critical thinking skills.
“Through programs like these, our youth in under-served areas are given the opportunity to achieve success in the workplace and higher education. I am happy for the opportunity to thank ShopRite” said Mr. Maddox.
Also in attendance was six-time LPGA Champion Val Skinner. When she decided to pursue her own cause, ShopRite was there to support her efforts. Since 2000, the Val Skinner Foundation has raised more than $10 million in the effort to eradicate breast cancer.
The 2016 ShopRite LPGA luncheon is a true celebration of those who are making a difference. “The missions of the charities are varied, but the people who receive the grants are incredible professionals who keep our communities strong. We are grateful that ShopRite can support their efforts”, said Karen Gozzi, Vice President of Digital Commerce, who organizes the ShopRite LPGA Classic tournament
Susan G. Komen for the Cure
While the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has grown to have a worldwide influence in the fight against breast cancer, it remains a grassroots organization focused on its core of local affiliates throughout the country. ShopRite/Wakefern recognizes and appreciates this local community approach and proudly supports Susan G. Komen Races for the Cure throughout its trading area year after year.
The pink ribbon has become a symbol during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, and ShopRite associates proudly wear pink and volunteer at local races, providing food and support to thousands of survivors and their families. They also form teams and participate in the Komen Race for the Cure events that take place throughout the northeast.
This year, ShopRite was a proud recipient of the Komen 2016 Pink Ribbon Award in the state of Maryland, an honor that recognized our commitment to the organization. Wakefern Food Corporation’s President and COO, Joe Sheridan, was inducted into the Susan G. Komen North Jersey Affiliate’s inaugural Pink Tie Guys, an honor recognizing industry leaders with the ability to inspire and mobilize against breast cancer.
Many years ago ShopRite joined with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to implement the Code Adam program in our stores. Named for six year old Adam Walsh, who in 1981 was kidnapped from a Florida shopping mall and murdered, the program outlines procedures for our associates to follow in the event a child is reported missing in one of our stores.
HOW CODE ADAM WORKS
When ShopRite shoppers realize that their child is missing, they should immediately go to the customer service desk for assistance. The first thing the employee will do is ask for a description. The employee will then announce over the public address system that there is a “Code Adam in Progress” and will give the child’s description. At that time, all the employees, except cashiers, will begin searching the store for the child. The “Code Adam” ends when the child is found or when the police assume responsibility for the search.
Each week millions of customers pass through our doors at ShopRite – many of them children. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our shoppers. In 2015, there were 460,699 abductions in the United States.

Special Olympics New Jersey Torch Run
Prior to the start of the Special Olympics, ShopRite team members join the NJ State Police for the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The day long run increases awareness of the start of the Special Olympics New Jersey games. “Torch Bearers” cover hundreds of miles stopping at various ShopRite store locations throughout New Jersey. After the torch is carried across the state, it makes its way to the Friday night opening ceremony, held to symbolize the start of the games. Wakefern’s running club joins several legs of the run with these inspiring athletes and their police escort.
Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games
For more than three decades, Wakefern Food Corp. has been a dedicated supporter of Special Olympics New Jersey, providing all of the food, snacks, beverages, suntan lotion and insect repellent needed for an entire weekend of competition. On top of these donations, hundreds of Wakefern associates volunteer their time to serve meals to the athletes, their coaches, families and friends.
This year’s games took place from June 10th through June 12th at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Ewing, NJ, where dormitories serve as the weekend-long home for athletes. Special Olympics athletes from across the state had an opportunity to showcase their talents in powerlifting, softball, swimming, track and field and much more.
The games have become a centerpiece for Wakefern/ShopRite’s volunteerism. Most of the associates come back year after year to lend a helping hand. Some work at the Olympic Village tent, others make sandwiches, while others serve food or hand out ShopRite bottled water.
“Our relationship with Special Olympics New Jersey has always been a top priority for our company,” said Joe Sheridan, president and COO of Wakefern. “For many of our associates, volunteering at the games has become a family tradition. It is common for sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers to volunteer side-by-side at the weekend-long event.”
During this year’s games, Wakefern associates served 16,396 hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and salads, resulting in thousands of smiles among the athletes, their coaches and families.
“It makes me very proud to be part of an organization that cares so deeply about the community.” said Maryann Barsi, Wakefern’s logistics coordinator for the Special Olympics New Jersey event.

NJSIAA ShopRite Cup
ShopRite is a proud supporter of the NJSIAA ShopRite Cup, an annual award presented to the top high school athletic programs in New Jersey. Now in its 10th year, ShopRite recognizes and values the role that youth athletics plays in our communities and rewards young men and women who contribute to their school’s success with this prestigious award.
In 2016, six schools statewide earned the recognition to be called one of New Jersey’s very best in high school athletics. ShopRite is happy to congratulate this year’s winners:

African American Festival, Baltimore
For more than 40 years, the African American Festival held in Baltimore, Maryland has brought the city and surrounding suburbs together. Organized by the City of Baltimore, the festival is the premier cultural event of the year featuring dozens of sponsor tents and Grammy award winning musical acts.
Since 2013, ShopRite has brought a health and wellness centered program to festival goers. Focused on eating right and staying healthy, the ShopRite pavilion allows customers to engage ShopRite dietitians, pharmacists, receive health screenings, and more. Past years have featured celebrity chefs, the Colgate dental team, and Novo Nordisk dietitian professionals.
In 2016 ShopRite partnered with the Brown Girl Village, a new festival initiative designed to empower young African American women in Baltimore. The ShopRite pavilion featured lotions, beauty products, and even a “pink carpet” for photos.
On stage at a ceremony recognizing major sponsors, associates of the ShopRite stores in Maryland, smiled and waved to a crowd of thousands as Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, thanked the sponsors for another successful year. “Thank you ShopRite!” proclaimed the Mayor.
Dove Right On Girls
In 2014, ShopRite introduced Dove Right On Girls, a Unilever scholarship program that recognizes young women who are doing extraordinary things for their community. This year, ShopRite and Unilever were proud to recognize Sarah Jameson of Medford, NJ, Lauren Giella of Ramsey,NJ, Sarah Ackels of Canton, CT, Justine Leary of Brandywine, DE, Nicolette Sonmez of Brodheadsville, PA and Carisa Jones of Glen Burnie, MD as the 2015 winners. Each recipient was nominated for the impact that they’ve had on their community and were each awarded a $4,000 college scholarship.
Sarah Ackles – A the age of 11, Sarah Ackles started a hunger fighting initiative in her home state of Connecticut. She has recruited volunteers and hosted meal-making events that have resulted in thousands of meals being made for children in need in Connecticut. The youngest winner of the scholarship contest also created a website SarahStopsHunger.com.
Lauren Giella – A young lady who received inspiration from her father diagnosed with leukemia, Lauren has raised more than $45,000 dollars for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A leader in her community and in her school, Lauren has gone out of her away to help others, stay active in school sports and hold a top 10% ranking in school. Sarah is a Dove Right On Girls scholarship winner for her leadership in the battle against cancer.
Sarah Jameson- A current sophomore in high school, Sarah used her passion for music to create The Sarah James Music Foundation at the age of 11. The foundation, now in its 6th year, raises money for music school scholarships. Now, under her stage name Sarah James, she regularly performs acoustic guitar in self organized fundraisers to support her foundation.
Carisa Jones- Carisa is a passionate soccer player with aspirations of playing in the Women’s World Cup and is currently a nationally ranked athlete. As a coach to little kids who have similar dreams to hers, she never loses the competitive edge or desire to see everyone achieve their best. She truly wants everyone she comes across to succeed in a sport she holds so close to the heart.
Justine Leary- This accomplished high school junior maintains a 4.0 GPA while volunteering at events in her community such as church festivals and school functions and she also tutors. Her true passion is golf, and as a member of First Tee, Justine gains the opportunity to teach a game that inspires her greatly. Justine also works to help homeless dogs and cats find a home.
Nicolette Sonmez – Nicolette, a straight A student who is ranked 3rd in her class, commonly finds herself tutoring math, helping out as the track team manager, or playing the role of piano teacher. Earlier this year, Nicolette ran her own toy drive with more than 150 toys being donated to pediatric patients at Pocono Medical Center. She also sings in her church choir.
Colgate / TerraCycle Playgrounds
TerraCycle and Colgate have partnered with ShopRite to help local elementary schools earn a brand new playground. In 2015, Flanders Elementary School was the lucky winner of the fully sustainable and colorful new playground. The school in Southington, Connecticut won the ShopRite/Colgate Recycled Playground Challenge, an exclusive contest for schools in the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland. In 2014, the BelovED Community Charter Scholl in Jersey City, New Jersey, was the proud recipient of a playground installed on their school grounds.
“We are proud to connect with our vendor partners, like Colgate, to help deliver this incredible opportunity to schools in our local communities,” said Chris Skyers, Vice President of Health and Beauty Care for ShopRite stores. Open to all public and private schools, preschools, colleges and universities in the ShopRite service area, students compete by recycling the most “unrecyclable items” they can. Items include commonly considered unrecyclable items, like toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, and floss containers. The winning school’s playground is amazingly made out of these very items by the teams at Terracycle.
