The Best of… Desserts

Do you have a sugar craving that only a dessert can satisfy? Desserts and sweet treats can be a part of a healthy diet when eaten in moderation. The key is keeping portions small and choosing better-for-you versions of your favorite products. Here we provide our “best of” guidelines for frozen novelties, cookies and ice cream.

The Best of… Frozen Novelties
Cool treats can be found in the dairy and frozen sections of your local ShopRite from popsicles, and fudge pops to
puddings and fruit gelatins. Keep in mind that these products are treats, so enjoy them in moderation! Here’s how
to choose a “best of” frozen novelty:

  • 150 calories or less per serving
  • 1.5g or less of saturated fat per serving
  • Choose no-sugar-added and low-fat options when available

*No-sugar-added products have no sugar added during processing but may still contain natural sugars (milk, fruit).
This is not to be confused with sugar-free products which contain 0.5g or less sugar per serving and are often
sweetened with artificial sweeteners.

Try ShopRite® brand no-sugar-added-fudge pops and fat-free pudding varieties, Creamsicle® no-sugar added bars, Skinny Cow® products, Hunt’s® pudding and pruit gelatins.

The Best of… Cookies
The cookie aisle can sabotage a healthy eating plan especially since these tasty treats make it hard to eat just one. It’s important to learn to live with the foods you love, and not deprive yourself. Use these “best of” guidelines when selecting a “once-in-a-while” cookie treat:

  • 200 calories or less per serving
  • 2 grams or less of saturated fat per serving and 0 grams of trans fat
  • 10g or less of sugar per serving

Try Kashi® TLC Cookies, Barbara’s Bakery® Snackimals, Teddy Grahams® varieties, and Barnum’s®
Animal Crackers, Health Valley® oatmeal raisin cookies and chocolate chip minis

The Best of… Ice Cream
When buying an ice cream, your options are more than just which flavor to choose. No-sugar-added, slow churned,
and low-fat are just a few varieties available in your ShopRite frozen food aisle. Check out our “best of” guidelines
when deciding which ice cream treat is right for you:

  • 150 calories or less per serving
  • Choose a double churned (lower fat version with a creamy texture) or frozen yogurt
  • 3g or less of saturated fat per serving
  • 10% Daily Value of Calcium per serving

* Keep in mind all nutrition information is based off of a ½ cup serving, about the size of 2 golf balls!

Try Edy’s® Slow-Churned Yogurt Blends, Turkey Hill® No-Sugar-Added or Fat-Free, Breyers® Smooth and Dreamy Light, Blue Bunny® Reduced Fat, No Sugar Added
