East Meets West: General Tsao’s Ratatouille

Posted by

General Tsao. Who was he? Perhaps a great warrior? Or maybe a great chicken cooker? The best karaoke singer of the East?

I guess we’ll never know, but one thing is for sure: General Tsao’s chicken is an American-Chinese dish that most people love eating, but almost immediately regret consuming after. It’s heavy and sooo full of sodium.

Those 5 lbs you lost? Forget stepping on a scale for the next week because they’re back! Your wedding ring? You won’t be wearing it for days.

But, it tastes oh so good! What is a gal to do?

I have a solution for you made possible by ShopRite. ShopRite recently sent me an array of great Asian Style sauces. As soon as I saw the General Tsao Style Stirfry sauce I was ecstatic. I could finally try to create a really healthy dish that has the yummy sauce that I loved to eat in college and regret immediately after.

My refrigerator is bursting at the seams with zucchini- one of summer’s best vegetables. I have been absolutely itching to make ratatouille with the zucchini (hmm… Maybe the itch is from poison ivy).  So I thought, voila! let us make a fusion of east and west dishes. General Tsao has now been Frenchified.

Perhaps I should name this dish:

Monsieur Tsao, un général d’armée et son ratatouille
Feeds: A small army, duh! <Snicker>

1 cup green zucchini, diced
1 cup yellow zucchini, diced
1 cup onion, diced
1 cup tomato, diced
1 cup red bell pepper, diced
3/4 cup ShopRite Special Edition General Tsao Stirfry Sauce

1. Saute the onions in olive oil over medium heat until translucent. Add remaining vegetables, cooking for approximately 5 minutes.
2. Add ShopRite’s General Tsao Stirfry Sauce. Cook for another 5 minutes.
3. Serve over rice and enjoy!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As a POTLUCKTM blogger, I received the ShopRite Special Edition General Tsao Stirfry Sauce from ShopRite for free.
