The ShopRite Cup The 2006 ShopRite Cup — Honoring Student Athletes
Supporting sports and education has always been entwined in the fabric of ShopRite’s giving. The ShopRite Cup, established in 2003 by the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJISAA) and ShopRite, is one of these worthwhile programs. “We’re honored to be back awarding the ShopRite Cup for the fourth year to these exceptional high schools,” said Karen Meleta, spokeswoman for ShopRite. (See photos of winning schools below.) “Not only is the ShopRite Cup a great award,” said Steve Timko, executive director of NJSIAA, “it also inspires a positive spirit of competition and excitement throughout New Jersey schools. Student athletes are striving to do their best in every game, watching their points throughout the year in hopes of winning the Cup!” ShopRite recently made a commitment to continue the Cup through the 2008–2009 school year. What is The ShopRite Cup? The ShopRite Cup recognizes the best athletic programs in New Jersey High Schools in six group classifications. To receive an award, schools must accumulate points based on their performance in championship play in 32 individual sports (fall, winter and spring) sanctioned by the NJSIAA. Schools receive points for finishing first, second, third and fourth in group state championships. Prior to the cup, high schools had been acknowledged by the NJSIAA for championship performance in individual sports but the ShopRite Cup is the first award in the state’s history that honors the entire sports program using performance-based criteria. |
