About Grade A Markets Inc.
After losing his job to the Depression, Salvatore Cingari bought an old school bus, loaded it with fresh produce and became a successful grocer, calling his business Grade A Market. In 1943, he moved to his first building and soon his sons joined him in the business. In 1991 the Cingari’s stores became members of the Wakefern/ShopRite cooperative. Today, four generations of Cingari’s own and operate 10 ShopRite locations in Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut.
Community Outreach
For the Cingari’s, giving back is a family tradition. For over 30 years they have been dedicated to the fight against hunger by supporting the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, of which Sam Cingari is Chairman of the Board.
Education is also a top priority. Tom Cingari Sr. has served on the Board of Directors of Trinity Catholic High School for over 10 years. In addition, Joe Cingari works with the State Street Debating Society in Stamford and the family helps fund four, yearly college scholarships for high school students who participate in the debating programs.
Chip Cingari has served as a member of the Board of the Connecticut Food Association since 1983 and on the Board of the Italian Center in Stamford since 2004.
For over 25 years Rocky Cingari has led the family’s support of the Darien Lions Club and their affiliation with the Yale Eye Center at Yale University. For more than 25 years, the family has been instrumental in helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the Center so it can continue its cutting-edge research.
