Moderate Your Plate

"Everything in moderation", a common phrase that's tossed around healthy eating conversations everywhere. But, what does moderation really mean? Read on as we clarify just what it means to eat a healthy diet with “all foods in moderation.”

A Healthy Diet Means:

Practice portion control. Knowing correct serving sizes of foods is the key to moderation. Whether you choose healthy whole grains or decadent chocolate cake, eating the correct portion sizes will allow you to enjoy all foods while still controlling calories. Check out our Portion Size brochure at www.shoprite .com or call 1-800-ShopRite (746-7748) to request a copy.

Healthy rules and boundaries. Ever try depriving yourself of your favorite treats and goodies? Bet that didn’t last too long. By setting “healthy boundaries,” you can learn to live with the foods you love, not without them! For example, try limiting that bowl of ice cream to once a week, or instead eat half the amount and choose a reduced fat version. If it is pizza you crave, order your slice with less cheese or with whole grain crust. You have to find a strategy that works best for you and your taste buds!

Plan your eating. Having a plan is more than half the battle, and eating small, frequent meals is a great way to boost your energy levels. Plus, eating often will prevent hunger pangs from getting the best of you, which can cause you to overeat at meals. A good rule of thumb is to: eat within a half hour of waking and every 2-3 hours thereafter!

Eat a variety of foods. Eating a variety of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, and healthy fats will ensure that you are getting all your essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, protein, and calcium. Plus adding variety prevents healthy foods from getting boring!

Enjoy your food! Ever hear the expression, “stop and smell the roses?” We also need to “stop and enjoy our food.” Become aware of the taste, texture, and smell of the foods you are eating. Make meal time important and set aside time to enjoy meals and savor each bite. It helps you to feel satisfied and prevents overeating. Some helpful tips may be: put your fork down between bites, engage all five senses and turn off the TV!

As you can see “moderation” can encompass more than just what we’re eating. Don’t make your meals and snacks accidental, practice intentional eating. You may find that your healthy choices may seem a bit more pleasurable than you once thought!
