GREEK YOGURT
When you walk down ShopRite’s dairy aisle, you may notice that the shelves are filled with yogurt. Among
the many varieties is Greek yogurt, which is quickly becoming a favorite for its dietary benefits and
versatility as an ingredient in recipes.
Greek yogurt is made with milk and an active yogurt culture like other yogurts, but before packaging Greek
yogurt is strained to remove the excess watery whey. The result: a creamier, thicker, more satisfying
yogurt. Although brands vary, Greek yogurt typically has twice as much protein, less sugar, and less
lactose than regular yogurt.
Fullness Factor –The additional protein in Greek yogurt may help you feel fuller, faster. Studies show that
consuming protein, as compared to carbohydrate and fat, promotes stronger feelings of fullness. Greek
yogurt’s thick, rich and creamy texture can help satisfy cravings and help you maintain a lower-calorie diet.
Easier to Digest – Greek yogurt contains fewer carbohydrates than regular yogurt and therefore less
lactose, making it easier to digest for those who are lactose intolerant. Greek yogurt also contains the good
kind of bacteria, which can help regulate digestion.
A “Do” for Diabetics - Greek yogurt has a naturally lower sugar and carbohydrate content than regular
yogurt, which makes it a great choice for diabetics who want a product that meets their nutritional needs.
Gluten-free - Greek yogurt is gluten free. It contains no wheat, rye, barley or other gluten-containing
thickeners making it a great dessert alternative for those with Celiac disease. (Be sure to always read
ingredient labels, since new product formulations can occur).
Go-to Ingredient - Greek yogurt is delicious enough to eat plain or topped with a bit of granola and fruit. It
can also be added to many of your favorite recipes.
