‘Tis the Season for Healthy Snacks

Looking for some holiday treats you can enjoy without any guilt? Here are four fun, festive and healthy snacks you can make at home with your little ones. Make a few extra to bring to that holiday party. They’re sure to please the crowd!

Snowman Stacks
Fresh broccoli florets
Low-fat ranch dressing
Grape tomatoes, halved
Small appetizer plates
Yellow pepper strips

Have children slide 3 banana slices onto each skewer. At the top of the skewer, slide the apple piece on top of the bananas and follow with the grape (this will be the snowman’s hat). Use miniature chocolate chips for eyes and buttons and the carrot sliver for the nose of the snowman. Insert the pretzel sticks into the banana slices for arms.

Christmas Tree Dips
Fresh broccoli florets
Low-fat ranch dressing
Grape tomatoes, halved
Small appetizer plates
Yellow pepper strips

Have children spread 2 tablespoons of low-fat ranch dressing onto a small paper appetizer plate. Shape dressing into the shape of a Christmas tree. Gently arrange broccoli florets on ranch dressing. For ornaments, place tomato halves on the broccoli “branches” and yellow pepper strips as garland. As children eat, they can enjoy their veggies with dip!

Reindeer Food
Dry roasted peanuts or almonds
Red and green M&Ms
Whole-wheat pretzels
Dried cranberries

Take ½ cup whole-wheat pretzels and add to a small plastic snack bag. Sprinkle in a few nuts, cranberries, and M&Ms for color and extra crunch. Keep at few bags ready for snacks for children, but keep 1 bag to leave for Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Wreath
1 Thomas’ whole-wheat mini bagel, cut in half
Green food coloring
Low-fat cream cheese
Dried cranberries, or other colorful dried fruits, diced

Mix green food coloring with low-fat cream cheese until it is a medium-colored green. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on bagel halves. Sprinkle dried cranberries on top to make bagels look like decorated Christmas wreaths. Enjoy!
