Summer Excercise

Exercise is important (year round) for good health, but often times people give up during the summer months just because it’s hot outside.  Don’t let the heat stand in your way, with just a few “beat the heat” adjustments to your routine coupled with a healthy dose of fun; you’ll be able to keep your “cool” when playing summer sports or exercising outdoors.

Just a few reasons why summer is a great time for exercise:

  1. The kids are out of school which makes it a great time for family fun and outdoor activity.  Ride bikes, go for a walk, take a trip to the pool, or even just get out into the backyard and kick a ball around – these are all great ways to have fun, get active, and burn calories.
  2. Take advantage of daylight savings time.  The longer days create a perfect opportunity to get in a morning walk before it gets too hot, or to go for a nice walk after dinner.
  3. Since the weather is warm, use this opportunity to leave the car behind and walk to do some of your errands.  Walking to the bank, the post office, or even to pick up an iced coffee are all great ways to really “run” your errands.  You’ll get a double reward; burning calories while finishing your chores.
  4. Sunshine = Happiness – people often feel happier and more energized during the warmer months!  Take the family to a park and play a game of catch, soccer, tennis, or even rollerblade.  Or if it’s alone time you need, try doing yoga or meditating outside.  If it is too hot, do it in a shaded area like under a tree, or during sunrise or sunset.
  5. What better way to spend a hot summer day than in the pool?  Swimming is excellent exercise for your entire body, easy on the joints, burns lots of calories, and most importantly….its fun!

So no more excuses that “it’s too hot to exercise.”  Get moving; just be sure to grab your water bottle and sunblock before you head outdoors.

Remember:

  • Start slow and give your body a chance to adjust to the temperature.
  • Pay attention to the heat index.  Exercise early in the day or late in the evening when the sun is not at its peak.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay well hydrated during your activitiesRemember to hydrate before, during, and after your workout or activities.

If you are starting a new to exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor or health care professional before you head outdoors.
