Fruit makes a naturally sweet and healthy choice at the end of a meal. Not only does it taste great, it’s an
excellent source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. With just a little enhancement — and not many more calories —
you can turn fruit into a delicious anytime dessert:
Substitute without sacrificing the “sweetness”
| Instead of: | Try: |
| Sour cream | Plain, nonfat yogurt or fat-free sour cream |
| 1 whole egg | 2 egg whites or 1/4 cup fat-free liquid eggs |
| Cream cheese | Reduced-fat cream cheese or reduced-fat ricotta cheese |
| Heavy cream (for sauces or baked goods, not whipping) |
Fat-free evaporated milk |
| Whole milk | Reduced-fat milk or evaporated skim milk |
| Sugar | Reduce by half or try sugar substitutes made for baking |
| Whipped cream | Low-fat frozen yogurt (for topping), or reduced-fat frozen dessert topping |
| Butter | Trans fat-free margarine, olive oil or vegetable oil such as canola |
| 1 oz. baking chocolate | 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder |
| Butter, oil or shortening in chocolate baked goods such as brownies |
An equal amount of puréed prunes or baby-food prunes |
| Butter, oil or shortening in coffee cakes, muffins and quick breads |
Applesauce |
