Limited-Edition Cheerios Box Turns Upstanding Citizens Into Cereal-Aisle Celebrities
ShopRite Partners In Caring and General Mills Recognize Winners in Hunger Awareness Competition with a Spot on the Cheerios Box Edison, NJ (October 16, 2007) – Celebrity is a term usually reserved for those stealing scenes on the silver screen or making plays on the field. With the help of ShopRite Partners In Caring and General Mills, local hunger-fighting heroes are turning into celebrities of their own.
60 ShopRite Associates are being honored on 125,000 limited-edition Cheerios boxes for their store’s commitment to fighting hunger in local communities through the ShopRite Partners In Caring program.
The Associates were selected to appear on boxes after the their ShopRite placed among the top 30 stores in a contest held in support of National Hunger Awareness Day and sponsored by ShopRite and General Mills.
For the first time, this year’s program also included a “Hunger-Fighting SuperKids” essay contest. Parents, teachers and community members submitted essays describing a child who displays a sense of responsibility to help fight hunger in the local community. The four “Hunger Fighting SuperKids” were selected based on their participation in activities to help fight hunger, the spirit in which the activities were conducted and results achieved.
The winners are: 2nd grader, Leah Berke of Niantic, CT; 3rd grader, Kyra Paillex of Pittstown, NJ; 4th grader, Connor Bailey of Windsor, CT; and 7th grader, Monica Murphy of Spring Lake Heights, NJ. Each SuperKid received 2,500 Box Tops for Education for their school and a $500 donation to the hunger-fighting organization of their choice. They will appear on the limited-edition Cheerios box, the seventh in a series, alongside the 60 ShopRite Associates from the tri-state area.
“We are so proud of the dedicated Associates who help to raise funds year after year for local food banks. This program is a great way for us to get behind our associates and recognize what they do for the community,” said Karen Meleta, spokesperson for ShopRite Partners In Caring. “We are also excited to recognize local children who take part in hunger-fighting activities and demonstrate the drive necessary to lead the fight against hunger for the next generation.”
ShopRite Associates raised more than $330,000 during the two-week contest by offering $1 donation cards to customers at checkout, constructing awareness displays and holding events to support the cause. General Mills donated an additional $20,000 to the ShopRite Partners In Caring Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey.
