It’s Delicious with Citrus!

What better way to give your cooking a little zest than with citrus? More than just juice, citrus fruits add color, refreshing flavor and a nutritional boost to your recipes. The Vitamin C from citrus helps your body’s ability to absorb iron, an important nutrient. So add a little zest to your plate. Here’s how:

Citrus Tips

Choose Wisely: Heavy citrus fruits with a firm rind will be the juiciest. Choose these!

Store Properly: To keep citrus fruits fresh, wrap in a plastic bag and store in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer.

Freeze for Later: Fresh squeezed juice and zest can be frozen for later use.

Zest is Best: Grating zest into a recipe that calls for juice will enhance the flavor.

Adding Citrus to Your Favorite Recipes

Juice
A simple mixture of lemon or lime juice with olive oil, minced garlic, salt and pepper will dress up any green salad, pasta or potato salad, roasted or grilled veggies and marinate a lean cut of meat.

Try orange juice concentrate mixed with chipotle in adobo sauce. This can be used as a marinade for pork, chicken, or beef.

Sliced

Top fish, chicken or pork with thinly slice rounds of limes, lemons or oranges. The citrus flavor will seep into the meat or fish when roasted in the oven. For even better flavor, rub meat or fish with citrus zest too!

Serve lemon wedges with steamed, grilled or roasted veggies like broccoli, broccolini, asparagus, and sautéed greens for a punch of flavor without the fat or salt!

Segments

Orange and grapefruit segments add flavor and brightness to any salad. Orange segments or mandarin oranges can be mixed into a beef stir fry for a sweet and salty combination.

Zest

Add lime zest and juice to plain yogurt for a Mexican inspired topping to baked potatoes, tacos or salads. Create a rub for meat, pork and poultry using sea salt, pepper, lemon zest, and rosemary. Pulse in a food processor with olive oil, spread over meat and bake!

Herbs

Some herbs impart a citrus flavor. Look for them in the spice aisle. Try these in combination with citrus fruits or on their own: Lemon Grass, Lemon Pepper, Lemon Basil, Lemon Thyme
