ShopRite Teams with Gridiron Greats to Tackle Hunger

Eagles Alumni to Distribute Food to Area Needy Saturday, Nov. 18

WEST CHESTER, PA – November 15, 2006 – Vince Lombardi once said that if he had 11 Tommy McDonalds on his team, he’d win a championship every year. Jim Madanci couldn’t agree more, and the ShopRite of West Chester owner is happy to have the Hall of Fame halfback on his team this weekend as they set out to tackle hunger in the community.

McDonald and four other Philadelphia Eagles alumni – defensive end Greg Brown, end Dick Lucas, and defensive ends Don Ratliff and Will Wynn – will join Madanci this Saturday (Nov. 18) to distribute more than 250 food baskets to the needy in West Chester and Downingtown. The six will be distributing the baskets on behalf of West Chester’s Mt. Carmel Home and Foreign Mission and the Lord’s Pantry of Downingtown.

“We always hear about athletes being role models because of their profiles, but these four aren’t just lending their names to a cause. It’s great that their celebrity helps call attention to the hunger problem, but what’s really special is the fact that they’re getting personally involved in helping do something about it,” said Madanci. “Tommy and Dick both played on the Eagles’ last championship team, in 1960, and their being together in this effort after all these years just embodies what it really means to be teammates – and champions – both on and off the field.”

After meeting at ShopRite, 1115 West Chester Pike, at 8 a.m., Madanci and the former Eagles will pick up 160 food baskets at the Mt. Carmel Home and Foreign Mission, 628 E. Miner St. in West Chester, at 9 a.m., and then deliver them to families in the area. Beginning about 11:30 a.m., they will help Lord’s Pantry distribute another 110 food baskets at St. James Episcopal Church, 409 E. Lancaster Ave. in Downingtown. The baskets include turkeys, pies and other food donated by ShopRite of West Chester.
