Enjoy Summer Blockbuster Movies without Blowing Your Diet!
Planning on seeing this summer’s hot action adventure or chick flick? For many film buffs, a movie just isn't a movie without a tub of buttery popcorn or a jumbo-sized box of candy. These cinematic treats can turn your daily calorie intake into something more terrifying than the latest Stephen King flick.
To Pop or Not to Pop
Here’s what a tub of popcorn, small, medium or large, will add to your diet in calories and saturated fat:
Small Tub with 1 Tbsp. buttery topping- 370-670 calories and 2-34g of sat.fat
Medium Tub with 1 ½ Tbsp. buttery topping – 590-1,200 calories and 3-60g sat.fat
Large Tub with 2 Tbsp buttery topping – 910-1,200 calories and 3-60g sat. fat
Wondering why the range of saturated fat is so great? Some theaters have switched to healthier oils, like canola or peanut, while others still use coconut (high in sat. fat) or hydrogenated oils (a source of Trans fat). “Buttery topping” can add up to 260 calories to your tub and may contain Trans fats.
Your best bet? Find a theater that pops in canola or peanut oil (Cinemark is one, call and ask your local theater manager to find out). Stick to a small popcorn; even better if you share! Opt for no topping. Want some flavor? Sprinkle your popcorn with cinnamon for something sweet. Better yet, pop a fat-free version at home to take along.
Satisfy a Sweet Tooth
If you’ve just got to have candy, choose Junior Mints, Pepper Mint Patty, Gummy Bears, jelly beans and Tootsie Rolls for less saturated fat then is found in chocolate bars or chocolate covered candies . Keep portion size in check, having just a few pieces of your favorite, to control sugar and calories.
Your best bet? Bring your own “sweets”. Fresh cut fruit or dried fruit, nuts and cereal in baggies make great snacks for any age. Some theaters offer low-fat frozen yogurt. A small vanilla cone or cup is a smart way to enjoy a classic treat.
