Buying Organics on a Budget

Using Your Organic Dollars Wisely

Shoppers buy organic foods for many reasons: to decrease exposure to pesticides, avoid products grown or raised with synthetic hormones, fertilizers or antibiotics or promote a healthy environment.  However, many people shy away from buying organic foods because of their higher cost.  ShopRite can help. Try these ideas and reduce your exposure to pesticides, support the environment and still buy organic foods without emptying your wallet.

1.  Look for the ShopRite Organic Label

At ShopRite we have our own private label for organic milk, salad dressings, canned beans, vegetables, tomato products, apple sauce, cereals and more.  Our organic products taste great and can save you money.  Buying our ShopRite organic foods can free up money for you to buy more of the other organic items you'd like to bring home to your family.

Look in stores for our newest product, ShopRite Fresh Organic Milk.  Now you can have the great taste of fresh organic milk at a price you can afford.

2.  Know Your Labels:  Look for “100% Organic” or “USDA Organic”

The Organic Foods Act passed by congress in 1990, put the USDA in charge of writing national standards for organically produced agricultural products.  Foods that carry the USDA label are certified organic.  Terms to know include:

100% Organic:  The product contains 100% organic ingredients

USDA Organic: The product is at least 95% organic

Made with Organic ingredients: At least 70% of the ingredients are organic.

Exceptions include:  salt and water

Note that at this time there is still no USDA standard for organic seafood.  Seafood that is labeled organic will not hold a USDA certified seal.

3.  Shop our weekly sales

Look for great savings on your favorite organic foods in the Live Right with ShopRite section of our circular each week.  And don’t forget to check out the produce page.  Look for the Live Right with ShopRite label and find unbeatable sales on a wide variety of organic produce.

4.  Buy in bulk when it makes sense

Buy in bulk when your favorite organic meat and poultry is on sale.  Be sure to clearly mark these with the date of purchase and freeze for later use.  Stock up on ShopRite organic canned vegetables when the price is right.  Most canned foods are safe in your cabinet for up to 2 years.  Marking these items with the date of purchase is also a good idea to ensure you are using them within that time frame.  Other great stock up ideas are organic frozen vegetables, organic cereals, salad dressings, crackers, or granola bars.

5.  Shop Organic Produce in Season

Seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables are often less expensive and better quality.  Use organic apples and root vegetables in the fall; sweet potatoes and citrus in the winter; berries in the spring; corn, tomatoes and summer fruit in the lazy days of summer.

Check out our weekly sales by picking up a circular in our store or visit us online at ShopRite.com.  There, you can view the circular online and even create a shopping list.
