The Best Of… Continued

Fall is just around the corner which means hectic schedules will soon be in full swing. Jam-packed work
weeks, back to school for the kids and shorter daylight hours can make meal preparation difficult.
Sometimes grab-and-go is all you have time for! How do you keep things simple while still choosing
healthy options? Check out our “Best of” guidelines for frozen meals, canned soups and salty snacks.

The Best of… Frozen Meals
Frozen meals make it easy to practice portion control due to their pre-packaged containers. If a frozen entrée
just doesn’t satisfy your hunger, add extra vegetables or pair with a side salad for more bulk. The downfall
of frozen meals can be their saturated fat and sodium content. Allow yourself a little extra time in the frozen
foods aisle to read through the nutrition facts panel when choosing a “Best of” frozen meal. Here are our
guidelines:

  • 1 serving per package (some entrées are really two servings in one container!)
  • 4 grams or less of saturated fat per serving
  • At least 3-5 grams of fiber per serving
  • 300-400 calories or less per serving
  • 600 milligrams sodium or less per serving (This is part of the FDA’s definition of a “healthy” meal. With the recent focus on reducing sodium levels, 400-500 mg per serving is even better!)

The Best of… Canned Soups
Whether you pack it in a thermos or bring a canned version, soup is easy, fast and filling! Your best bet is a
broth-based, reduced-sodium version with lots of beans and veggies! Serve with a piece of crusty wholegrain
bread for dipping! Here are our guidelines for choosing a “Best of” canned soup:

  • 250 calories or less per serving
  • 3 grams or less of fat per serving
  • 3 grams or more of fiber per serving
  • 480 milligrams or less of sodium per serving

The Best of… Salty Snacks
It’s 3:00pm and that salt craving has arrived! Be smart about your salty snacking and practice portion
control! Always check the nutrition facts panels for serving size since some bags contain multiple servings!
Here are your guidelines for choosing a “Best of” salty snack:

  • 150 calories or less per serving
  • 3 grams or less of saturated fat per serving
  • 200 milligrams or less of sodium per serving
